tert-Butyl chloride is a clear, colorless liquid. It is soluble in most organic solvents; almost insoluble in water. tert-Butyl chloride is an effective alkylating agent for electrophilic substitution (Friedel-Crafts reactions). Nucleophilic substitution of chlorine atom in tert-butyl chloride occurs through SN1 way.
Production.
tert-Butyl chloride is manufactured by hydrochlorination of isobutylene.
Uses.
tert-Butyl chloride is used as an alkylating agent to introduce tert-butyl group into aromatic compounds. It is an intermediate in preparation of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals.
